Life, Loss, and Lengthy Posts

April.  Has it really been since April when I last post?  A lot has been happening.  I needed a blogging break.  Among other breaks.  Blogging was one thing I could actually break from - whereas - the rest I wasn't able to.

It's been a hard several months.  In April, I lost my mother-in-law to Small Cell Lung Cancer.  It was an awful 3 year battle or so.  After the first year, they did preventative so it wouldn't spread to her brain.  Because of that preventative treatment it fast-forwarded Alzheimer-like symptoms.  Cancer Sucks.  I've said it before and I will say it again.

In May, we also lost Charlie.  He was about 19 years old and for those of you who I've known for a while - knew he was feral since the time he was a baby and was a rescue.  He battled strange issues throughout the years and we had always dealt with them.  The last couple of years he was deaf, too.  In the past year, we had watched him get smaller and smaller and he got to the point where many things he once loved were difficult for him.  Things just started shutting down and the vet assumed there was cancer somewhere but didn't want to put him thru all the tests and anxiety.  For the first time since I was 3 years old I'm without a cat in the house.  It's strange.  Our fur family is the smallest it's been in a long time.  Riley and Cricket are still around but we have been having problems with Riley and his natural aging process, too.  He's about 18 or 19 years old now, too!

In June, we found out the company we work for had been sold.  We've been dealing with the change ever since.  It's mostly been good with more changes on the way but it's been a non-stop world-wind of things happening one after another.

Also in June, my mother found out that the sore on her face near her eye was skin cancer.  From what we can gather, everything should be ok, but we had to wait over 3 months for her to be seen again.

With everything going on, I have been unsuccessfully trying to deal with my own stress.  My chronic pain issues seem to come and go like they have in the past BUT now I am dealing with a few other issues I haven't dealt with before.  One being a scalp issue.  I have been trying to treat it with coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil, etc.  Just when I think I am making some progress it comes back with a vengeance.  I'm pretty sure it's some kind of psoriasis or eczema of some sort.

I try and keep this blog positive and happy and try and learn things and archive them but it's been so hard with this post not seeming to do any of those things.  I have been doing a TON of volunteer work and between that and seeing my niece when I can those seem to be the only two things keeping me somewhat sane.

I chopped off all my hair.  It's time for me to do it again.  I've gained weight again and need to shed about 20 pounds.  I think I would feel better if I did.  Winter is coming and that is when I struggle even more with not being as active and on-the-go.

I have a lot of things to blog about but am afraid I just don't have the time.  Because of Riley aging and reverting back to his separation anxiety years I'm not able to sleep in bed anymore.  I have to sleep down in the recliner so he won't bark.  Sleep has been few and far between because of it.  I know it's taking a toll.

I'm trying to start my days earlier so I will have some time for myself but then I just start jumping into work and not doing the non-work things I need to be doing.

I need to re-work my time.  I need to start listening to podcasts.  I need to shake the negative and focus on the positive.  I need to spend less time with the people and things that make me feel bad and start realizing I'm not that bad of a person.  That's been hard for me my entire life.  Certainly something I need to work on.

I have a lot of photos over the last several months I need to post and blog about here.  Many of them have to do with volunteering and new vegan finds but I'm also trying to take more photos of my surroundings and BREATHE.  I won't share those in this post but I hope to in near-future posts.  I just wanted to update you on where I have been and why I haven't been posting.  I need to start posting again...I think it will help me in the long run.  Thanks for NOT giving up on me.

Smoothies, Vegan Cheesecake, Furkids, Vegan Cheese Sauce, and More MyKind

Happy Monday!  This is pretty much a Weekend Round-up of sorts but I guess I am starting backwards.  This morning I was successful with trying to stick with my Monday thru Friday Morning Smoothies!  Here's what I did for this morning:

1 1/2 Bananas
2 Dates
1 C of Coconut/Almond/Hemp Milk
1 T Sun Warrior ORMUS Peppermint

It's pretty yummy!  I think I found the trick to doing smoothies with bananas for someone who doesn't like bananas like myself.  ADD DATES!  I wonder what tomorrow will bring for my morning smoothie?  I'm thinking Wheatgrass!

Last week I blogged about FINALLY finding Daiya's Cheezecake in my region.  I had some over the weekend.  Here's a photo of it.  I was looking for a vegan pie filling which I was able to find but I was really happy about the dyes and other not-so-great ingredients in them not to mention the PRICE.  So I found that buying a think of strawberries was actually cheaper than buying the canned stuff which is RARE where I live so I grabbed some and made my own.  All I did was throw some strawberries into my Ninja Blender (yes I still use this as a food processor mostly) and a bit of Organic Raw Cane Sugar.
*ADD 1 t of Garden of Life's Organic Plant Protein VANILLA.  It's optional but awesome!

I'm kind of spoiling a little bit of my upcoming MidWeek Munchies but telling you some of these recipes but OH WELL.  I'll post about some of the ingredients TWICE this week!  Here's yet another Vegan Cheese Sauce I made this past weekend and I topped it with Spanish Paprika that I bought in bulk at my local herb store!

This sauce as the following: 1/2 C Cashews, 1/4 to 1/2 C Pine Nuts, Juice of 1 Lemon, 2 t Apple Cider Vinegar, 1 C Coconut Milk, 1 Squirt of Yellow Mustard, 1 T Garbanzo Bean Flour, 1/2 t Paprika (and more to top), 1/2 t Turmeric, 3 to 4 T Nutritional Yeast.

The sauce was tasty but I think I used a bit more Spanish Paprika then I would suggest to others that are just trying it for the first time.  I also noticed that 'regular' paprika has very little taste whereas this Spanish Paprika is POPPING with flavor!  If you can find it - BUY IT!  The difference is amazing!

The furkids enjoyed the weekend cuddling up to us.  We were around more than we had been but we still took a trip to Buffalo on Saturday.  More on that later in the week.

Friday night while I was writing I had Charlie sitting next to me on the stairs.  Yes...this is our feral cat Charlie.  He's pushing 15 years old and doesn't seem to be slowing down much.  He likes tormenting the dogs that is for sure!

Oh!  Yeah!  We also saw our first snow fall of the season.  As you might now I'm NOT a fan.

This morning it was 28 degrees.  Brrrr!

And in Friday's mail I received a box from Garden of Life!  YAY!  They sent me a bunch of their new products and I have to say I'm pretty stoked!  You may know I am not usually one for pill-taking but many of these are liquids.  I'm especially excited about the Vitamin C sprays!  I've tried them already and the flavors are pretty impressive.  I'm taking these NOW to fight off the germs of my co-workers!  I've also started taking Colloidal Silver.  More on that in a future post, too!  I'm also excited to announce that Garden of Life is allowing me to do weekly giveaways on the weekends starting THIS COMING WEEKEND so stay tuned for that!

Furkids/Family Medical Updates & Timeline

If you read my post yesterday you will see that Paco is not doing well.  He was diagnosed with IMHA.  We are very worried.  He's currently at the vet hospital getting aggressive steroids and fluids.  I've been doing a lot of reading and research on the disease and it's NOT good.  Even if he pulls thru - it will be a long and tricky recovery.  It's so frustrating because other than the rash on his stomach he was NOT showing any other symptoms of the disease.  Perhaps that is a positive thing - meaning we caught it early - and he will do better than the majority of other cases I have been reading about.  Right now it's a waiting game and I almost can't handle that.

Last night I went thru the last 8 months in my head and put it all together...I can't believe (the following) all happened in the last 8 months with all 5 of our furkids...Suzie had two fatty tumors removed - her stitches popped and it set her back for a few weeks.  We lost our precious Gabby to Liver Cancer and that was totally unexpected.  Charlie had a wound that would not heal on his tail and he had to have his tail amputated.  Riley - just last week - had to have a large portion of skin removed from his neck and has a double ear infection that we are still treating.  6 days later - this has happened with Paco...I took him in for what I thought was a rash and it ended up being IMHA.  All this in 8 months.

In addition...my  husband has been having stomach issues for about a year and a half.  Yesterday (while everything was going on with Paco) he was out of town for more tests and procedures and it was confirmed a 2nd time - but by a specialist this time - that he does, in fact, have Crohn's Disease.

Yesterday completely sucked.  BUT...it's NOT a home without Fur-Kids.  And at least my husband now knows that it IS Crohn's Disease.  It's something he will have for the rest of his life but it's manageable.  Now if we can just get some more answers on what to do next for him.

Ponytail Palms, Cats Without Tails, Simple Foods from the Container/Rooftop Gardens

I know I have been posting a lot of food lately and you know I will continue to but I also have a lot of other things to post about too!

Here's a mish mash of things that aren't really food related - for the most part - that have been going on lately!

First - this AWESOME Ponytail Palm!  A few months ago my co-worker Sam brought one in for her office and I LOVED it so much!  I would do up and check it out each time I visited her office.  Her mother found one for me last week and it's now sitting on my desk.  I'm NOT next to a window but we will see how it does.  I have regular florescent office lights.  Hers is next to a window.  Mine isn't.  So I figured every Friday afternoon I would take mine upstairs and put it next to hers for the weekend near the window!

It's been a few weeks now since Charlie's surgery.  I wanted to wait to post about it until I was sure he was ok.  He had to have his tail amputated.  He has been doing remarkably well without this tail.  They left a bit of a 'nub'.  It's still healing but doing good.  When they took his tail off they noticed he had very small warts all over his tail that were NOT visible until after they shaved his tail to remove it.  They said to look for other unhealing wounds that may pop up.  They aren't overly concerned at this time that there is much else wrong.  However, IF he does have other unhealing wounds that form they said it may be cancerous. 

So of course when I saw this about 2 weeks after his surgery I was concerned!  After we took the cone off of him he had this small - yet clean - hole on his arm.  The first day it bled but I'm sure that was because he was licking it.  Ever since then it's been dry, clean, and unchanged - yet open. 

FINALLY yesterday morning I noticed this wound was closing!!!  I think we are on the upswing! 

As you can see on the other arm - that's the arm they shaved to put the IV in.  NOT the arm with the wound.  BUT...as long as it continues to heal - we are happy!

Okay...Okay...I know I said I wouldn't talk about food...but I can't help it!  Simple Foods left from last week!  Yes...I've now gotten 4 salads from our containers at work!  YAY!  I used some leftover dressings I made to top it and it was a nice simple lunch.

Update on Charlie

Well, it's been a rough week...that's for sure!  I'm so thankful it's Friday!

I actually got sick this week!  I rarely ever get sick.  The last few times I thought I might I was able to fight it off...NOT...this time, tho!  It started with a sore throat and QUICKLY advanced into a head cold.  It's been YEARS since my last head cold.  Even after the first day I was still in denial it was happening to me.  When a cold does sneak thru and grab me it seems to whack me hard!

I think - and HOPE - I'm on the upswing, now!  Anyhow...on to the REAL reason for this post.  CHARLIE.

Today I took him back to the vet for them to look at his tail.  There has been absolutely NO PROGRESS in the healing of his open sore.  The vet said the tail is the hardest to heal because there isn't much/any access skin to help with the healing progress.  I asked what caused it and he said it really could have been anything.  He's an indoor cat 100% of the time so it wasn't anything outside like him getting into anything or in a fight or accident.  Anyhow, 2 weeks ago they gave him antibiotics and steroids to help the healing process.  Since he's a fairly feral cat this was very tricky but both of the vets that saw him (a husband and wife team) were VERY patience with him (and with me!)  Yes!  I was a nervous wreck, too, because the last vet told us NOT to bring him in again unless it was a life or death situation.  NOT these two vets, mind you, but the vet that we dealt with prior!  These two are great with him.  Sure - Charlie's NOT an angel but they are ok with that.  They just approach him differently.  I'm grateful.  They classified it as a non-healing wound.  They were optimistic that these shots of antibiotics would at least help move things along but they didn't seem to touch it.  The only other option we have is to amputate his tail.  We have scheduled his surgery for the 28th.  It's NOT cheap.  But we are hoping he will recuperate nicely.  He's around 14 years old.  This concerns me.  With his age and all.  BUT...the vets said that once he's out of surgery they will work with the dissolving stitches which should not only help with his recovery team but also avoid more stress on him - avoiding a recheck.  Unfortunately, he will also have to wear a 'cone' for about 12 days or so.  If all goes well the first 12 days - he should do fine after that.  So - wish us luck!  I really don't know how this is going to go!  But I'm really not ready to lose another member of our family right now (then again - are we ever really ready?)  It was just last month we lost our precious Gabby.

Changed Cat Behavior

Since Gabby is no longer with us...Charlie is the sole cat in the Bliss Household.  When Dale and I first started dating we rescued him from extreme conditions and he's been with us ever since.  He's always been quite feral, tho.  When we adopted Gabby - he seemed to enjoy having her around.  They were polar opposites.  In the words of Paula Abdul "Opposites Attract".  In our house the cats followed suit as Dale and I are VERY different in MANY ways.  

I will say - Charlie has completely SURPRISED me in the last month.  He's been much more friendly, calmer, yet more active, social, and even sweet.  He's been greeting us when we go upstairs - which is where he pretty much 'lives'.  He has the run of the house - like the dogs - but the cats made their kingdom the 2nd floor long ago!  Our bathroom is on that floor as well as our Home Studio that Dale uses daily and my Craft Room.  He especially enjoys the Craft Room because of HIS Chair that's in there.

Earlier in his life I stopped giving him treats because he had "crystals" but it seems he's able to tolerate them YEARS after that battle...so...I started giving the cats treats again when we were trying to put weight on Gabby and have been giving him 1 a day since.  He LOVES them.  I think they make him feel 'special.'

I'm sad that he's the sole cat of the house.  But I'm happy that he seems to be coping ok.  I'm also happy that I am hearing more purring out of him lately.  He's become a bit more social and active - so that's good.  If he goes back to his feral-acting ways all I have to do is say "Treat" and he switches back to being sweet again!  I took this picture of him over the weekend.  He's looks so cute, doesn't he?

Foods, Fiats, & Furkids

Where to begin?  LOTS to blog about today!  Some recaps from the weekend as well as some other stuff!  I guess I will start with food!  Yesterday I had a light food day.  Not only because I was busy but because I wasn't overly hungry.  I had a Raw Day - which was nice!  But it was VERY simple.  I had a mini meal of Coconut Water and Aloe Chunks and a whole grapefruit.  Last night I had a MASSIVE Salad.  Lettuce(s), Tomatoes, Radishes, Cashews, Sprouts, etc.  I topped it with a salad dressing that I will post below about along with some Nutritional Yeast.  The sprouts I sprouted myself and blogged about that previously as well.  In addition - I added a few raw sprouted chickpeas that I also did myself - in my kitchen.  A few days ago I started sprouting some Radish Sprouts that aren't quite ready yet.  Speaking of Radishes, tho, I found some at the Erie Whole Foods Co-Op that were semi-local and gorgeous!  I could resist and HAD to pick them up for $1.99 per bunch.  They were HUGE and featured 4 different colors.  I used one of the Red ones in this salad.

This is a photo of the Homemade Raw Vegan Salad Dressing I made that you can also see on the salad in the photo above!  This was incredibly flavorful and SO EASY to make!  Here's what's in this Creamy Orange Dressing:
3 Mandarin Oranges
1 Avocado
1/4 C Lemon Juice
3 T Grapeseed Oil
1/4 C Water
2 T Basil

And speaking of EASY food and beverage prep...I discovered a neat way to make a glass of Lemonade!

8 to 10 ounces of water
1 T Lemon Juice
A few drops of NuNaturals Lemon Flavored Stevia

So easy and so tasty!

I've also been focusing on 'waste-not-want-not' type things in the house - especially in the kitchen!  After making the dressing above I saved the peels of the mandarins and put them in boiling water.  The aroma filled my kitchen and it was wonderful!  I also added a pinch of cinnamon.

I also made a few lunches a head of time last night.  This was one of them.  A simple Veggie and Rice Noodle Teriyaki Stir Fry.  I used frozen veggies - here - because there isn't much to choose from in the area of fresh right now.  I used Wildtree Teriyaki Sauce to taste.  I really like their sauce because it's not very salty at all - and - of course - it's vegan!

Multi-color peppers, peas, asparagus, corn, carrots, etc.  I even topped it with more sprouts!

Saturday - hubby and I took a drive in HIS new Fiat.  Yes...that's right...we now have TWO Fiat's!  They are even the same year but his didn't have a previous owner where as mine did.  His is a 'stick' where as mine is an 'automatic'.  We found out that his gets about 4 miles more HIGHWAY than mine does...which is kind of cool!  So...I average about 40 and he goes between 40 and 44 highway.  It was a fun drive!  We swung by the shop in Erie to have them check his breaks and it wasn't a big deal - they fixed a slight noise - and they chalked it up from it sitting on the lot previous to us buying it.  After that we were on a mission to find a good Indian Restaurant.  You see...my husband hasn't been a fan of Indian Foods and I am.  BUT...this place...he really liked so I was so happy!  We ended up in Niles, OH, and went to Bombay Curry & Grill.  Everyone was so nice and there were many vegetarian and vegan things to try!  We ended up both getting the buffet so he could try anything he wanted for a nice variety and I could see exactly what it was before eating it!  For the two of us - this bill was only $17.  AWESOME!

The 'furkids' have been doing well!  I woke up yesterday to this photo op!  Lately I have had to put this green blanket on top of my pillow and he will either sleep by my head or burrow underneath the blanket but on top of the pillow.  In this photo he wedged himself in between the pillow and the sofa arm rest and under the blanket!  So silly!

 And as I was getting ready for work the other day - the other two pups were 'cheek to cheek' and I don't mean the ones on their faces - in this photo - ready to lounge for the day while I went to work.

Charlie's doing real well!  It looks like the sore on his tail is getting better and he's been fairly nice.  As many of you may know - he's a pretty feral.  We are still missing Gabby and always will - but she's with Sammy now!  One day - we will be reunited!

Furkid Fun

I figured it was time for an update on our "furkids".  A few weeks ago Dale took this chair out of our home studio/office and put it in the hallway.  I think he thought I wanted it for my work station area in the corner of our living room but I was sure it wouldn't fit.  So there it sat for a bit near the Attic Door until we figured out what to do with it.  Well, Gabby made that decision FOR us!  She claimed it.  So we are going to try and keep it but put it by the window - it seems she is really 'digging' this chair.  It's a very high chair, I might add but she can look out the window of the upstairs hallway so that is probably another reason she likes it.  She's such a sweet cat!

It's been REALLY cold here the last several days and it's supposed to follow suit for the foreseeable future.  Paco's been burrowing and snuggling more and more.  I'm still fascinated by the art of nest making, here!  He totally did this himself.

In other news - Suzie is FINALLY doing well!  We had a stitch pop and it knocked the stitch removal date back 4 days.  Long story short she DID get them removed on Friday and has been a happy camper ever since!  She's such a trooper!

The only one I didn't get a pic of this weekend was Charlie.  He's been sleeping on his chair mostly.  He seems to be mending his tail ok by himself and it doesn't really seem to bother him.  I have been checking it often just to make sure, tho!  It's been closed for a while now so that's good!

Tornadoes, Storms, & How The Furkids Deal

(This is my 2nd Post of the day - Remember to Scroll Down)

Last Night was a strange one!  We were under Tornado Warnings, Watches, Severe Thunderstorms, as well!  Tornadoes are not an everyday occurrence where I live. 

<------ In order of appearance: Suzie, Riley, and Paco could have been any closer to each other OR any closer to their MOM while all of the commotion was going on with the storms!

I'm the one with my legs under the white blanket.  We were listening for an extended noise to head down to the basement but we didn't need to!  Thankfully!

I heard that a Tornado touched down in Union City which is about 40 minutes from us and it's rumored there was one in Scandia which is about 10 to 15 minutes from us!  The one in Scandia is unofficial at this time.  There were some without power for a little bit and the street lights were off-whack.  Our internet was down for a little while but nothing major.  This morning there were two school districts in the region on 2-hour delays and there was some debris such as branches and trees that were down and in the road, but again, nothing major to my knowledge.

I will say that Paco turns into a completely different dog when he is unsure of something!  It's like he's trying to be a 'tough guy' but gets really mellow and calm.  He didn't want to stray too far from us, that is for sure!  He did shake a little but not overly-so and not consistently. 

The Dogs were not the only ones who act differently!  YES!  All animals can sense weather changes - AND - mood changes!  It's times like this that I'm reminded of that!

Charlie is the WORST when the storms occur.  But last night - he hid for the first few hours and then was okay towards the tail end of them.  Gabby wasn't too bad.  She was on the stairs the entire time.  I took this photo after things started to wind down a bit.  It's rare if I get a photo of them together let alone with them both looking in my direction.

The Gang's All Here

 Happy Monday everyone!  LOTS going on!  And LOTS of photos!  The furkids wanted to say HI!  Here is a very recent photo of Riley (left) and Suzie (right).  They are getting read for a day of 'maxin' and relaxin' while mom and dad work!  They love vegggin' out but at the same time it's been so cold and crappy weather-wise that they often snuggle to keep warm.

Then we have Charlie!  He's the "Fat Cat" of the family! Pictured here he is laying on the landing of our steps.  He's usually a grump but we still LOVE HIM! 

It was a nice weekend this weekend despite the weather!  I did get a lot accomplished Saturday Morning!  A lot of house work and cleaning up.  DH and I went for an early dinner on Saturday Night!  We went to a restaurant we haven't been to in a really long time.  Richards Restaurant in Youngsville.  We will start going there often now that I know they have a nice sized salad bar!  That's something we lack in our area any more.  I might actually make a special phone call today to thank them for it!

 Here's Paco!  He's the only one who lets me do his nails.  Riley usually takes care of them himself and I take Suzie in to get them done as I don't trust myself.  She has dark nails and thick nails and she's a tough cookie.  Paco isn't too bad usually.  I use one of those Ped-i-PAWs nail files.  But pictured to the right you can see that Paco is biting his nails!  I think he learned that from his brother Riley!  And pictured left is when I was going out of the kitchen into the living room over the weekend.  We use Baby Gates for their protection...mostly Paco's protection.  Since he has bad knees I really want to keep him safe.  When I am in the kitchen he tends to try and jump.  I also try and keep him down stairs so we have another Baby Gate by the stairs.  BUT that gate does double duty!  So the other two don't go up stairs and eat the cat food!  PLUS that gives the cats their freedom to lounge upstairs, too!  It works well!  PLUS...we can just step over the gates if we need to.

As you can tell I am really LOVING the superior camera on THIS iPhone!  I took this photo of Riley and Paco and Paco just looks so cute here!  I love his stance!  Riley...well...he's washing his feet!  I couldn't imagine our house without FurKids!  It would be so quite and boring.

I have been InstaGram-ing most of these photos!  This next one was featured as the #DogOfTheDay over the weekend!  I was so excited!

 This is Suzie!  She loves being up HIGH.  Like on the back of the sofa.  She love her picture taken.  She's a ham.

Since we don't have any human kids - I know I talk about our FurKids a lot but they really ARE our LIFE.

Cat's Chairs

 I would like to introduce you to one of my parents cats.  The photo above is Bernie.  They have another one named Jeter.  In case you cannot 'get' the connection they were named after Bernie Williams and Derek Jeter of the New York Yankees.  I'm a 3rd Generation Yankees Fan.  My favorite of all time was Dave Winfield.  Anyhow, above you can see that Bernie loves to sit on their microwave.  No...it's not on!  She moves when they go to use it! Cats on Tuesday - Charlie & Gabby

 One of the many things that my this My Blissful Journey (in Life) are my KIDS...my 3 dogs and 2 cats.  This is my first Cats on Tuesday Post.  I hope to continue to do it.  Above you can see Charlie.  He was the very first one of the bunch when my Husband and I first got together.  He was born in Jan/Feb of 2001.  He's a character but is also a tad feral!  Sure...he looks cute and innocent here but he's our Wild Child.  A few years down the road we decided to adopt a 2nd Cat and he seemed to appreciate that and mellowed out a bit - he's good to her - still questionable to most, tho! But we LOVE him LOTS!

This is Gabby.  It's not the greatest photo since it was taken in really bad lighting and on my iPhone but I have to snap pics of her when I can.  She's a fluff ball and a quick one.  A lot of people that see photos of her think she's always pissed off but she's the sweetest darling!
