Random Updates & My Parents Went to St. Lucia(...And All I Got Was Digital Photos)

I might be showing my age here...but does anyone remember when they were growing up and someone went on vacation and you either gave or received a T-Shirt that said 'so and so went to (insert location here) and all I got was this (insert adjective) T-Shirt!!  Well, my parent recently got back from St. Lucia and I'm so glad they had a great time eventho I was back here freezing my arse off!

They did, however, send me photos while they were away and I thought I would share some of them with you, too!  Up top, you can see a gorgeous sight, eh?  And here to the left, you can see my father.  Apparently, my parents went on a Pirate Ship Adventure and my dad was able to shoot a canon.  My mom opted to dance with some of the crew!

Not only did they send me photos they also brought home some coins from the island - as well as - Canada - since they flew out of Toronto.  I was greatly appreciated!  St. Lucia is one of the islands/countries that use the East Caribbean States currency.

Since we used to live right near the Canadian border I still had a few low-value coins from a while back but since travel to/from Canada now requires a passport and I still don't have mine it's been several years since I have been up there.

Since my parents know I'm a reggae and Bob Marley fan they sent me a photo of one of the Bob Marley inspired drinks they had while they were there.

I love the colors!

The first full day they were gone we had another snow storm.  Blah!

Other than that, yesterday and the day before were pleasant...the weather was in the 40s each day.  But today we are back to more snow and temps in the 20s.

Can you tell I was jealous of their beautiful weather and sightseeing?

In related yet additional news...DH was also out of town last week - Wednesday thru Saturday.  So it was pretty strange not having anything to do but, to be honest, all I wanted to do is be under warm blankets when I wasn't at work.

As you can see...Cricket had the same idea.

The last couple of days, DH has been REALLY sick.  He picked up some bug that he and at least 6 other people got, too, while at a convention.  I've been sleeping downstairs so I don't get it.

I think the furkids enjoyed the HOME TIME.  Paco has been burrowing under more than one blanket for weeks on end, now!

With all this cold weather, I tend to go into HERMIT MODE.  Sometimes I don't even feel like thinking about what to eat or make to eat for that matter.

One of my default foods is vegan nachos.  Sometimes I go simple with homemade vegan cheese and salsa.  Altho, not pictured here, recently I added some homemade vegan sour cream, too!  Sometimes I add veggies, other sauces, spices, etc.

About a week ago I did do a vegan grocery haul after watching The Vegan Zombie's take on it.  2 items that were not in his video that were also new-to-me items were these two soups you can see here.

As you know, I enjoy making my own soups, and you will see that I have done just that later in this post.  But, I also came across these two at my local Dollar Tree and thought I would give them a whirl.  For a buck - they come in handy at work - when I don't have time to make something else or get something downtown.

Both of these soups were clearly marked VEGAN, not once, but twice!  I tried them both and they were pretty good.  Heck, I would buy them again for a dollar!  Why not!

Here's the other one I found.  In addition to this thrifty vegan grocery shopping, I must tell you about another SCORE at the STORES, lately.  I had won a gift card a while back and wanted to see how many articles of clothing I could buy with it.

I went to our local Label Shopper and to my surprise, they were having their $3, $4, $5, and UP Sale.  I walked away with 16 shirts for a total of $57.  I bought one shirt for $6 but the rest of them were between $2 and $5 each.

This was great because a lot of what I was able to find I could layer for the extremely cold weather we have been having lately.  Which was something I was lacking in work clothes.

And finally, here is that soup I was telling you about!  It's a vegan Black Bean blended soup.  The swirl you see is homemade cashew cream or 'sour cream'.

Ingredients include 1 C Black Beans, 1 C Salsa, 1 Small Onion, 2 Cloves Garlic, 2 Cooked Carrots, 4 C Water, Pinch each of sea salt - cumin - cayenne - celery salt - cilantro.

And then I added some of the cashew cream and a squirt of Sriracha.

Music & Movie Monday

Many of you know that music is a huge part of my life and that I LOVE many different types of music.  Lately - I have been listening to more funk than usual.  And that was even before I watched Get On Up - the movie based on James Brown and his life and career.  We watched Get On Up last week and I thought it was wonderful.  The acting cast was amazing!  My husband continued to point out that there was lip-syncing going on some of the time but other than that it was a great flick.  Mick Jagger was one of the producers and there was a short bit of the movie about the encounter between James Brown and The Rolling Stones.  We watched the 'extras' and those were just as interesting as the movie.  Especially the relationship Dan Aykroyd had with James Brown - and I thought it was neat that he was in the movie -  you may remember that James Brown was in the Blues Brothers movie that Dan starred in years ago, too!

Just for kicks I thought I would list some of the latest tunes I have posted to my Soundtracking App:
Funkadelic - One Nation Under a Groove
Donell Jones - U Know What's Up
311 Love Song
Keith Sweat - Freak With Me
Bootsy Collins - Bootzilla
Oingo Boingo - Weird Science
Herbie Hancock - Chameleon
Terence Trent D'Arby - Wishing Well
Brian McKnight - Anytime
Kanye West & Jamie Foxx - Gold Digger
112 - Cupid
Lindsey Buckingham - Go Insane
Adam Ant - Strip
Erasure - Chains of Love
Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories - Snow Day
Talk Talk - It's My Life
Papa Roach - Last Resort
Crazy Town - Butterfly
Next - Wifey
Stereo MC's - Connected
Erykah Badu - Certainly
Salt N Pepa - Expression
Joan Jett - Love Hurts
No Doubt - Bathwater
Newcleus - Jam On It
World Party - All The Young Dudes
Supergrass - Alright
James Brown - Get On Up
The Cranberries - Zombie
They Might Be Giants - Istanbul
Roxette - Listen To Your Heart
Bob Marley & The Wailers - Rat Race
Ace of Base - Young And Proud

I could go on and on but that will give you a little hint at my diverse music hopping lately!  I have to add that I am not really a fan of Kanye but I like that song because of Jaime Foxx, mostly.  I like the beat and Ray Charles back-up sound that Jaime provided.  I seem to be going back to college days on many of them and I'll always LOVE the 80s, too!

Vegan Contest & Giveaway ~ Garden of Life's Marley Fit!

You've heard me talk about my love for the Garden of Life Products that I have tried - but this is yet another reason I LOVE them...their efforts around conservation, sustainable framing, green practices, organic disciplines, and philanthropy.  It only made sense to me when they teamed up with the MARLEY Family as the Marley family shares most - if not ALL - of those principles with their lines of products as well.

Garden of Life’s commitment to sustainability begins with organic farming. CERTIFIED ORGANIC plant protein from sprouted grains and legumes is truly good for our planet, unlike conventional farming practices that utilize 150+ synthetic pesticides leaching into our water supply and soil, promoting genetically modified seed crops and reducing our planet’s biodiversity. In addition to CERTIFIED ORGANIC farming practices, Garden of Life uses recyclable packaging, vegetable inks, sustainably farmed papers and 100% certified renewable wind energy credits to run our company’s operations.

That's why TODAY I am starting a giveway for this...
  • Support healthy blood sugar levels and burn fat naturally with the power of Svetol® Green Coffee Bean Extract, RAW Food Created Chromium, Organic Cinnamon, and Organic Sprouted Grains†
  • Help regulate your cortisol levels and manage stress related cravings with RAW Organic Ashwagandha†

Vegan Mac & Cheese (Daiya Sauce), Coconut Almond Date Balls, Garden Of Life Hull

I'm still catching up on posts from the last week or two and today I am going to blog about some of my foods and finds!  Starting off with this super easy recipe for a Vegan Cheese Sauce using Daiya Shreds to make Mac & Cheese.

1 C Daiya Shreds
1 C Almond Milk
2 T Nutritional Yeast
1 T Earth Balance
Pinch of Garlic Salt and/or powder
I have to say...this was super tasty, a great comfort food, and one of my better attempts at a Vegan Mac & Cheese.

I really don't know what possessed me to make these Coconut Date Balls but they turned out pretty good - especially for my first attempt!

1 C Almonds
3 Soaked Dates
1 tea Coconut Oil
1 tea Cinnamon
pinch of sea salt
zest of a lemon (or two)

All in a high speed blender!  THEN...I rolled them in shredded coconut!  I used Approx 2 to 3 cups.  It was a little messy but it was worth it!

This past Monday I received my box of goodies from Garden of Life!  I'm so excited about these products and will be blogging about them often because of the amount in which I received!  I guess you really don't know how big the containers are until they are smack-dab in front of you!

This box couldn't have come at a better time because I'll be going into work EARLIER than usual for the next week or so and I'll be putting their Energy-Blends to the test for sure!  Yeah...like 4am...FUN!

The very first one I tried was the Perfect Food Raw - Apple Flavor.  It's a Brand new flavor of theirs!  I have to say the aroma was very nice!  The flavor was peppy right from the start!  An energizing yet welcomed smack in the face.  As I continued to sip I found myself liking the flavor more and more.  For this first taste-test I decided to do it straight-up...1 scoop in 8 ounces of water.  I will be adding this to recipes for quick breakfasts in the near future, too!  This morning I did the same thing with the Raw Protein Marley Coffee Blend...1 scoop in about 8 ounces of water.  I enjoyed this flavor even more than the apple which I was a little surprised at because I'm not much of a coffee drinker.  I prefer tea...as many of you know.  This Marley/Garden of Life Partnered Combo is exclusively available at Whole Foods Stores.  I'm looking forward to my attempts with both of these products as well as the other products I received.  But I have to say they are pretty tasty and satisfying as-is and straight-up with water, too!  Just a preliminary mini review of sorts with MUCH MORE to come on these products, soon!

Live The Life You Love, Gratitude, Volunteering, and Fun

A while back I wrote about bringing up more and more things I am thankful for, showing my gratitude, trying my hardest to be happier and less stressed, and how I try and keep this blog more of a POSITIVE Place.

Looking back over the last few weeks there have been many things I have wanted to share and I intend to.  It's been on-the-go for a while now and here are a few reasons as to why...

The last Saturday of June - our county fair had their 1st Annual Car Show.  They were doing it as a fundraiser.  My husband is a board member of theirs and we attended it.  He M.C.'ed and we brought our car but didn't register or official show it.  His uncle brought his newer Corvette, too!  It's the one in the background.

Along with his uncle and cousin we helped with the running and announcing as well as prizes.  The Cafe their debuted at last years fair was open and did well!  It was a nice event especially for the first year.  They had about 98 vehicles and I am told more that were not registered.  I've actually been spending more and more time at the fair grounds.  Usually I would let my husband do what he did  year-round and I would go the week of fair.  This year I have been there several times already.  I've gone to help him with the Pavilion - where they have the concerts and other things the week of fair - getting it cleaned and ready not only for Fair Week - but for a few other events they are holding on the grounds, this year, too!

Here's a photo of some of the barns at the fair.  My husband, his uncle, and cousin recently helped repaint a few of them.

This isn't too fair from the Pavilion.  This year I hope to take some photos of the animals from these 'mom and pop' farms.

Even tho the weather has been very wet this summer and we have been getting a lot of rain - I sure am happy about the time of the year!  I LOVE summer!  Of course I think it's 'going too fast' but I am grateful for it!

I'm also grateful for my new(er) Bob Marley T-Shirt that my Dad got me a while back.  This is a self photo while I am wearing it so it's not the clearest but I LOVE the font and quote.  I also LOVE the old football (Soccer) photo they used in this print!

I never realized until this shirt how much the old "M" Marley Family/Team Logo looked like the McDonalds "M".  I don't think Bob would have liked that too much - at least that is my assumption!

Gabby's Spot of the Month, Paco & "Wildthing", Bob & Ky-Mani Marley, and Nervous Doctors RANT

Gabby does this thing where she has a "spot of the month" and every month or so she changes it up to a different spot she likes to hang out at.  This past week it's been to the left of the top of the stairs in between the stairs themselves and the door to our Home Studio.  It's a very small spot but then again she's a small cat!  She probably only weighs between 8 and 9 pounds...she's mostly hair/fur, actually!  She's such a sweet heart!  Because she's a Persian cat it's some times hard for me to snap a good photo of her because she often looks angry or pissed off but that couldn't be further from the truth...Gabby is a very happy cat!

Later today I have my first appointment with the Chiropractor.  I'm not going to lie - I'm nervous - but I am nervous by nature - always have been!  I'm terrified of any kind of doctor.  So far I am not freaking out as much as I usually do but then again it's very rare for me to go to ANY doctor because I have been lucky enough not to have any or many problems but when I have gone I have freaked out...especially the last time I went to the Dentist.  And even at the Dentist I haven't had any real reason to act like that!  I have never had a cavity,  At some point I will have to get my Wisdom Teeth out and I am terrified of that, too!  But seriously...I want to know what is happening with my left leg, Hip, Calf, Ankle, Arch, and it's gotten to the point where it's driving me insane.  Oddly enough...TODAY is the first day in a while I have felt this AWESOME, figures, right?

Over the weekend Paco started in with one of his "Play Sessions".  This occurred while Tone Loc's Wildthing was playing on my Pandora Shuffle.  We often refer to Paco as "Crazy Man Stan" when he runs around with the "Zoomies" in certain patterns and is playful and releasing some of his energy!

I've blogged a few times now about my LOVE of Bob Marley as well as his family, their charities, and the Marley Brand.  This past weekend my father gave me a very LARGE Promotional Cardboard cut out.  I set it up on a slant off the back of my mom's car.  It's over 6 feet high!  He also gave me two Bob Marley shirts.  The sales person he talked to wanted me to wear the shirts and post them on social media and send him a copy so Marley's Mellow Mood can re-post them on their social media.  I thought that was pretty cool :)

In other Marley News - a good friend of mine - that I have mentioned before - Jen - she's also in radio and over in Yuma and her and her friend and co-worker Teri recently interviewed Ky-Mani Marley for a concert he did in Yuma last weekend!  I was lucky enough to hear the interview and prior to interviewing him Jen asked if I could think of any questions to ask him.  While listening to the finished product of the interview I noticed a few of my questions were included!  I was so excited!  Thanks Jen & Teri for letting me be a small part of it!  I wish I could have been there for the show!

Marley Mania, When I Was A Dancer & Product Reviews - Barre Bars, SunRidge Farms Cashews, & New Earth Raw Crackers

I was in Dance for 8+ years when I was younger.  So was my sister!  I took 7+ years of "Jazz" and a year of "Tap" in the middle.  Here is a photo of a Scrapbooking Page Layout from years ago!  If you click on it you can enlarge it and read the journaling part.  I started my "Dance Career" as a student of Sylvia McDonald and her sister.  We attended Sylvia's School of Dance in Lockport, NY.  I enjoyed dance very much and will always remember - especially my early Dance Days - as a great time!  When we moved - we had to change Dance Schools.  It wasn't as fun or memorable and contributed to my overall decision to end my Dance "Career".  I still think about Sylvia and her dance studio and how much fun I had and I wish every school was as good AND FUN as hers!  Fast Forward Ahead - to present day!  When I saw Barre Food Bars online I knew I wanted to try them!  Not only because they were vegan but because they were made with athletes in mind!  They were MADE by Dancers but are enjoyed by nearly everyone and now I can say I am officially a fan of them, too!

The one I would like to tell you about today is their Pirouette Cinnamon Pecan.

Pirouette Cinnamon Pecan is our original Barre flavor. The classic pairing of cinnamon and nuts stars in this chewy, ooey, gooey bar—think crumb cake meets cookie dough. A great, satisfying snack to power you through 32 fouettes, 100 crunches, or even just the midday office slump!

Ingredients

dates, walnuts, pecans, agave nectar, hemp seed, rolled oats, hemp protein, ground flax seed, brown rice protein, vanilla, cinnamon, sea salt, peanuts.
I really enjoy this bar!  It's sweet but not as sweet as the Berry one I tried and will be officially reviewing in the near future, too!  It has a nutty and grainy texture with a nice and even smoothness to it as well!  The cinnamon is gentle but still noticeable!  I found this to be chewy - but creamy - too!  And it's NOT hard on the teeth with is always a PLUS!  As I continued to eat it the dates come into the play more and it was fantastic!  Then...the Sweet combo of Agave and Date!  Totally YUMMY!  My favorite part about this is that is was totally satisfying WITHOUT being over filling which is EXACTLY what the creators had in mind!  After eating this - you can go about your Dance, Yoga, and other athletic activities!  As an after thought there is a pleasant pecan/peanut aftertaste that lingers, nicely, too!

I really LOVE their website, too!  It's way-more than 'just' a place to buy their food bars!  It's a nice place to go to reminisce about dance!  The photo's are awesome!  PLUS - they are charitable!  Just take a look at this!

Last night my mother gave me a re-useable bag with Bob Marley on it.  I've always been a fan of Bob - he was taken from this world way-too-soon BUT his kids and other family members are doing a wonderful job of keeping his memory alive!  Speaking of Charity - this man and everyone in his family are VERY Charitable - yet another reason I love them!  I'm a fan of their Mellow Mood Teas on occasion and have reviewed them over on The Sororitea Sisters Site.

I have about 15 Bob Marley CDs and various collectibles throughout my home.  I was very excited to get this bag from my parents!  I'm told I my Dad scored me a Life-Sized Cardboard Cut-Out that I should be receiving in the next month or two, too!  Exciting!

Here's a photo of me in Florida at the Bob Marley Cafe inside Universal Studio's back in 2006!  I remember having a wonderful vegetarian plate of Stuffed Peppers and Yuca Fries and a smoothie!

Another Snack I have been into lately are these babies!  SunRidge Farms Thai Curry Cashews!  They are AWESOME!  Not just awesome EXTREMELY AWESOME, actually!  The Cashews - themselves - are softer than 'standard or store bought' cashews but are completely fresh!  You can really TASTE the freshness!  There is a HINT of salt and a nice medium-strength curry flavor!  Not too hot - bit a speck of spice to keep you coming back for more!  They leave a nice 'warming' aftertaste, too!  I won't lie!  These didn't last long in my stash as I kept eating them by the fist full and couldn't wait to jump right in and have some more!  Another aspect of this company I LOVE is how GREEN they are!  I mean...check this out...

Here are just a few ways that we live green:
  • Our warehouse is equipped with a 99kW solar panel system
  • Seventeen delivery trucks have been converted to renewable biodiesel fuel
  • Low-flow water-saving devices have been incorporated into our offices and manufacturing plant
  • Recycling programs include corrugated cardboard box, ink-jet cartridges, office paper, plastics, and shrink wrap
  • Our state-of-the-art purification and ventilation system has improved air quality throughout our operations
As far as the specifics with the Thai Curry Cashews - batch roasted cashews are tossed in exotic all natural spices cumin, turmeric, paprika and cayenne pepper...YUM!!!!

I do have one more thing to share with you today!  These little gems!  They are (Raw) Chipotle Chia Crackers from New Earth and they are WONDERFUL!

They are VERY hard and crunchy but fairly easy to 'snap-off' a smaller bit if you don't want to eat that specific sized cracker!

I did break them up a bit and took smaller bites of each.  There is a good amount of mass to them and they ARE quite filling!  Not only are their Chia Seeds in these but Sprouted Buckwheat which I want to incorporate more of into my diet!  The Chipotle Flavor has just the right amount of heat to it!  They are savory and delicious!  They make a nice snack or munchie and stand alone you can also crush them into soups and salads!

They are RAW, Vegan, Gluten-Free, and say "Texan-Proud: Go Texan" on the bag!  Also printed on the bag was "Made with gratitude and sprinkled with enthusiasm."  I totally LOVE that!
